Year 5 - Curriculum Overview 2017

Class Teachers: Miss Gray and Mrs Kan

Teaching Assistants: Mrs Phipps and Mrs Cardow

PE day: Tuesday and Wednesday

Home Learning: Your child’s home learning tasks will be set weekly on a Friday and will be due in by the following Thursday. These will consist of an English, a spelling, a maths and a mental arithmetic task.

Reading at home: It is expected that your child reads for 15 – 20 minutes every day. This must be recorded in their Reading Record Books and initialed by an adult. It is an expectation that Reading Records are brought in to the academy each day so that teachers can monitor the reading happening at home.

Spelling Focus: Revise the spellings on the Year 3 and Year 4 spelling lists and practise the Year 5 & Year 6 spelling list words. Children should also be learning the personal spellings sent home each week in their Spelling Log.

Arithmetic Focus: Children should be practising their times tables (up to 12 x 12) as well as revising telling the time, on an analogue clock, to the nearest five minutes.

English overview:

This half term, the children will be learning about and writing in the style of both fiction and non-fiction texts. The children will have the opportunity to write recounts, non-chronological reports, suspense, setting descriptions and narrative poems. Grammar and spelling will be a focus throughout all lessons. Each week a different spelling rule will be focused upon and the children will have the opportunity to investigate and learn the spellings within this rule throughout the week. Guided Reading will be taught to develop prediction, retrieval and inference skills. Children will be given the opportunity to practise supporting their predictions and inferences with evidence from the text. 

Maths overview:

This half term, the children will learn about place value, addition, subtraction, properties of shapes, length and time Additionally, arithmetic skills, including number bonds, times tables, rounding and adding and subtracting multiples of 10, 100 and 1000 to a given number, will be covered and the children will have the opportunity to apply these skills within a context.

Science overview:

This half term, the children will learning Earth and Space. They will describe the movement of the Earth, and other planets, relative to the Sun in the solar system, describe the movement of the Moon relative to the Earth, describe the Sun, Earth and Moon as approximately spherical bodies and use the idea of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky. To develop their scientific enquiry, the children will report on findings from enquiries, using both oral and written explanations.

Art/DT overview:

This half term, the children will be creating their own space pictures in the style of Peter Thorpe. They will explore primary, secondary and tertiary colours and consider the use of complementary colours when creating their own artwork.  

Humanities overview:

Humanities this half term will have a Geography focus. During their geography lessons, the children will be using globes, atlases, maps and digital mapping to name and locate the world continents and oceans as well as the counties and cities of the UK. The children will learn about time zones, geographical and man-made features of different countries and lines of longitude and latitude.

Computing overview:

Throughout the term, the children will be learning about online safety and how they can keep safe online. The children will recognise and discuss different scenarios, showing both acceptable and unacceptable online behaviours, to help develop their knowledge and awareness of how to keep safe online. Additionally, the children will be learning how to use search technologies effectively, safely, respectfully and responsibly and begin to identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact.

French overview:

This half term in French, the children will begin by learning about their family. The children will be learning how to describe family members and relationships. Using a French dictionary will be a skill that the children develop throughout their French lessons.

Music overview:

This half term in music, the children will be focusing on our community. They will be singing songs originally from Jerusalem and conducting metres.

PE overview:

PE lessons this half term children will be learning about the skills for Tennis and Football. During these lessons, the children will be developing flexibility, strength, technique, and creating their own games showing an understanding of the rules and expectations to work within a team.

PSHE overview:

This half term, the children will be learning about British Values, friendships and relationships. During PSHE lessons, the children will be looking and understanding more about personal goals and challenges whilst spending time investigating emotions and responsibilities.

RE overview:

This half term we will focus on the religion of Christianity. The children will be learning and exploring Christian’s beliefs, how and where Christian’s worship and learning about some Christian celebrations and stories.
