Year 4 - Curriculim Overview 2017/18

Class Teachers: Miss Buck and Miss Wallsgrove

Teaching Assistants: Mrs Seaman, Miss Lancley and Mrs Rowland

PE day: Monday and Wednesday

Home Learning: Your child’s home learning tasks will be set weekly on a Friday and will be due in by the following Thursday. These will consist of an English, a spelling, a maths and a mental arithmetic task.

Reading at home: It is expected that your child reads for 15 – 20 minutes every day. This must be recorded in their Reading Record Books and initialed by an adult. It is an expectation that Reading Records are brought in to the academy each day so that teachers can monitor the reading happening at home.

Spelling Focus: Revise the spellings on the Year 1 & Year 2 spelling lists and practise the Year 3 & Year 4 spelling list words. Children should also be learning the personal spellings sent home each week in their Spelling Log.

Arithmetic Focus: Children should be practising their times tables (up to 12 x 12) as well as revising telling the time, on an analogue clock, to the nearest five minutes.

English overview:

This half term, the children will be learning about and writing in the style of both fiction and non-fiction texts. The children will have the opportunity to write recounts, narrative descriptions, poems, persuasive letters and create persuasive adverts. Grammar and spelling will be a focus throughout all lessons. Each week a different spelling rule will be focused upon and the children will have the opportunity to investigate and learn the spellings within this rule throughout the week. Guided Reading will be taught to develop prediction and inference skills. Children will be given the opportunity to practise supporting their predictions and inferences with evidence from the text. 

Maths overview:

This half term, the children will learn about place value, addition, subtraction, length and time Additionally, arithmetic skills, including number bonds, times tables, rounding and adding and subtracting multiples of 10, 100 and 1000 to a given number, will be covered and the children will have the opportunity to apply these skills within a context.

Science overview:

This half term, the children will learning about animals, including humans. During this topic, the children will describe the simple functions of the basic parts of the digestive system in humans and identify the different types of teeth in humans and their simple functions. To develop their scientific enquiry, the children will report on findings from enquiries, using both oral and written explanations.

Art/DT overview:

This half term, the children will be creating a chocolate box based on a specification from Mr Willy Wonka. The children will be following the research, design, make and evaluate process in order to produce their chocolate box. When creating their boxes, the children will be required to select and use a range of tools and materials.

Humanities overview:

Humanities this half term will have a Geography focus. During their geography lessons, the children will be using globes, atlases, maps and digital mapping to name and locate the world continents and oceans as well as the counties and cities of the UK. To develop accuracy when describing locations, the children will be using the 8 points of the compass. The children will spend time identifying the human and physical characteristics of our local area.

Computing overview:

Throughout the term, the children will be learning about online safety and how they can keep safe online. The children will recognise and discuss different scenarios, showing both acceptable and unacceptable online behaviours, to help develop their knowledge and awareness of how to keep safe online. Additionally, the children will be learning how to use search technologies effectively, safely, respectfully and responsibly and begin to identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact. Using their skills of using search technologies effectively, the children will create, using a variety of software, a multimedia posters about the life of Roald Dahl. 

French overview:

This half term in French, the children will begin by learning how to introduce other people. Following this, the children will learn the vocabulary to talk about how they travel to school. The children will be learning to how say how they travel and justify their choice of transport. Using a French dictionary will be a skill that the children develop throughout their French lessons.

Music overview:

This half term in music, the children will be using their voices to speak expressively and rhythmically, and discover ways to create ostinato accompaniments to enhance their performances. The children will also be making descriptive accompaniments and discovering how the environment has inspired composers throughout history.

PE overview:

PE lessons this half term have a gymnastics focus. During these lessons, the children will be developing flexibility, strength, technique, and control and comparing performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their best.

PSHE overview:

This half term, the children will be learning about new beginnings. During PSHE lessons, the children will be looking and understanding more about personal goals and challenges whilst spending time investigating emotions and responsibilities.

RE overview:

This half term we will focus on the religion of Hinduism. The children will be learning and exploring Hindu’s beliefs, how and where Hindus worship and learning about some Hindu celebrations and stories.
