Year 6 - Curriculum Overview 2016/17

Amount of time which should be spent reading every day: 30 - 40 minutes

Key Spellings/ spelling patterns for the term: Y5 & Y6 High Frequency Words as well as looking at words with the–ough string, word endings -cial, -tial and how to generate words from prefixes,

 

Key maths facts which your child needs to know this term: all times tables (up to 12 x 12) and related division facts.

English overview:

This term the children will be focusing on both fiction and non-fiction texts. The children will have the opportunity to write poetry, recounts (diary entries), a persuasive letter, a newspaper report, a character profile, in role (with their own choice of form and audience), captions, narratives and play scripts.

Maths overview:

This term the topics of place value, multiplication and division will be covered. The children will develop their skills on statistics and fractions and decimals. Additionally, basic mental maths skills (including number bonds and times tables) will be covered and the children will have the opportunity to apply these skills within a context or problem. 

All other subjects (including French)

History: The children will be exploring Ancient Greece.

Science: The children will be focusing on evolution and inheritance. Children will be learning about famous scientists and will have the opportunity to work scientifically through observing, asking questions and collecting evidence.

RE/PSHE: Why and how rules and laws are made and enforced. To face new challenges positively. To know that there are different kinds of responsibilities. To be aware of different types of relationships

French: The children will be learning the vocabulary relating to the weather and seasons
